When I first started travelling to Europe 25 years ago, the Frommer guides were like beacons. They had a very definite goal in mind: To let you enjoy Europe for $XX dollars a day. Their books were fun and informative; but somewhere along the line, the Frommer people lost touch with their leadership. When you try to write a book for everybody, you wind up writing for nobody. Let us take accommodations as an example: They are classified as Expensive, Moderate, and Inexpensive. Now I am not on public assistance by any means, yet I can barely afford Frommer's Inexpensive accommodations, which average around more than $100 a night. There are guidebooks which are good at accommodations and restaurants but not on sights; and there are others (like the superb DK Eyewitness Guides) which concentrate on the sights. I am hard put to place Frommer on this spectrum. In the Netherlands, he downplays the Zuider Zee Museum in Enkhuizen and the Open Air Museum in Arnhem, yet spends 3 chapters on Luxembourg, including one on "Planning a Trip to Luxembourg." Hello! When was the last time you got the wife and kiddies mobilized for a fun filled 3 week vacation in the tiny Duchy of Luxembourg? On the plus side, the "Best of..." lists are a useful counter to the general lack of emphasis in this guidebook. If you were visiting the U.S., you would want a guidebook to show you why you might want to spend more time in New York than Youngstown. Once the best of guidebook series, Frommer has been reduced to cataloguing sights. Where's the excitement? Not here.

The first domestication of animals and cultivation of cereals occurred in south-west Africa. The oldest cereal crops of sub-Saharan Africa were the millets and west of the great bend of the Niger there was also rice. Maize and cassava were introduced from South and Central America in the 16th and 17th centuries. The ancient languages were Hamito-Semitic languages of the north and north-east, click languages of the Bush and Hottentot peoples, and the Eastern Sudanic languages and Western Sudanic languages. The Bantu languages spoken today are closely related to each other. The introduction into Aftica of South-East-Asian food plants, for example the banana and the yam, made possible the growth of dense populations. There was a great expansion and dispersal of Bantu farmers. The idea of kingship probably originated in Egypt. The organizational efficiency caused the politco-religious ideas to be widely distributed. Trading expeditions had an effect on the material culture of a wide region. Then Egypt declined. It had neither iron or ore. Northern Kush had ore but no fuel. The southern region had both commodities. Meroe could provide for its own subsistence and trade and conquer in the Sudanic belt of Africa. As to the Sudanic civilization, the typical state was not feudal, it was bureaucratic. Around the royal person there formed a galaxy. The book goes on to detail Africa's encounter with the Mediterranean world and then with Islam. Trading in East Africa and West Africa is delineated carefully. Ihe slave trade did not create disequilibrium until late. European colonization was not substantial until the the last quarter of the nineteenth century when matters became frenzied as each country sought to assure itself of a piece of the action. Prior to that, European missionary efforts had been fairly widespread. Following World War I the German territories were governed under mandate through the auspices of the League of Nations evidencing a principled undertaking on the part of the colonial powers. Decolonization took place rapidly following the establishment of Ghana in 1957.The book is chock full of information and descriptions of the African peoples and kingdoms and modes of government and influences and the movements of various groups over time. The maps are useful.

I read the 1966 (second)edition of this volume and was not aware of updates until opening this site. Despite much political and demographic change in Africa over the last 30-odd years, and despite the availability of much more research and the advent of DNA-based studies, not even heard of in 1966, I found Oliver and Fage's work a pleasure to read. Their chapters are intelligently organized, the flow of ideas and trends unblemished by superfluous detail or tedious asides. The entire continent is covered, North Africa as well as Sub-Saharan, though personally, I felt a little more could have been said about Madagascar. As a reader without a professional stake in African history, I found this book just the thing. It raised many issues that I had not thought of, told me about many patterns and issues of which I had known nothing, and did so in clear, concise language which kept my interest throughout. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in African history. I myself will look for an updated edition to see what the authors say about the last third of a century.

The authors did a great job. They could have made this too high-level and impossible to understand for those who don't have enough background in African history, but they haven't. They could have made it too simplistic and abbreviated so that the reader would be missing important information, but they haven't either. They found just the right balance and the right approach to cover the entire history of Africa without dwelling on any details for too long and without skipping anything that would prevent the reader from getting a good understanding. In some chapters, the book is a little heavy, but you can't put that much information without it feeling dense sometimes. Whenever I found one chapter a little too much to handle all at once, I simply re-read a few of its pages and I was ready to move on.I must say, I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a primer on African history, I learned so much from it.The only parts I wish they had given a little more information on are the former colonies of Italy and Spain. In particular they didn't say very much about Somalia, Libya, and the Spanish colony west of Morocco.

It is very obvious that the authors, Oliver and Fage, know their stuff very well, that said I found the book highly technical with little explanation for the historical voyeur, making me constantly have to resort to the Britannica to fill out my understanding as they never gave an general introduction for me to hold onto. By chapter 5, this grew wearisome, and I jumped ship. I think if you have a good understanding of anthropological and archaeological terms you would do better than me but if you are looking for a leisurely general overview, like I was, this is not it.

This books perceptive can be summed up from a sentence on page 94- "... from the eight to the fourteenth centuries [Africa] almost certainly gained more from her partial inclusion in the civilization of Islam than she lost from lack of contact with Europe, then passing through a dark age redeemed only by the surviving light of Christianity." Tragically for Africa and it's people, when the Europeans arrived in Africa, they used Christianity to rob Africans of their land, resources and Independence. Africa was carved up by European countries and have not recovered yet. Dr. John Henrik Clarke and Basil Davidson's books are true books about Africa and it's people, not Africa from a European perspective disguised as African history as this book purports to be.

Excellent. A superb overview of the history of Africa from a man who spent his life studying and teaching his material.

Knorr is the second book in The Elemental Origins series. Saxony is spending her summer in Venice where she'll be working as an au pair to two little boys. When she arrives, she's surprised to meet the youngest boy, Isaia, who is clearly ill and doesn't speak. The two create an unexpected bond which only grows. As do his symptoms which his mother doesn't seem to find strange. During an outing, Saxony and Isaia stumble upon a break-in and a fire which puts them in the path of danger, creating the perfect circumstances for her to receive an unexpected gift. Her summer takes a turn when she catches the attention of two handsome Italian men and a powerful crime family who have plans for her new found abilities. Saxony's opportunity of a lifetime takes several twists from a bond with a sick boy to catching the attention of a dangerous family. A.L. Knorr continues to explore the origins of the various elements. This time Knorr focuses on the element of fire, featuring a stunning location and a twist with a mafia family. Isaia is the biggest connection Saxony makes, forming a strong bond. Isaia is seen more than his brother who barely has any scenes. The focus is on the bond between Saxony and Isaia which is a catalyst for major events in the story. Their scenes together show her softer side. She's strong willed and feisty generally but as an au pair her protective instincts and kind nature are explored. Knorr never sways from the heart which often has Isaia and their bond at the center. He's a sweet character, completely capturing the innocence of a child. She also befriends Isaia's mother who helps guide her through a surprising change in her life. Knorr weaves in plenty of mystery as Saxony works to figure out the source of her newfound abilities and why a crime family is interested in her. As the mystery unfolds, her love life also comes with a few surprises with some romantic moments and plenty of dangerous ones. The sweeter moments give a lightness and flirty quality to the story while also giving way to another danger she doesn't expect. She becomes a hero she didn't know she could be and it's clear this is just her origin story, with plenty more to come. Born of Fire is another exciting journey in the Elemental Origins series with more secrets revealed, a fiery lead, a stunning setting, and a crime family twist.

From the Author

A Story Born in VeneziaI moved to Italy in June 2015. I still spend a lot of time in Canada every year, but the bulk of the past 19 months has been spent in Venice and in a little village in the Italian Alps called Magras. As a writer, if you spend enough time in one place, some incarnation of it will find its way into your stories. Even with its problems (there are big issues with cruise ships and the sheer volume of visitors leaving a damaging footprint on Venice's fragile ecology), the spires and towers of Venezia imprinted on my heart in a way few cities can, and no surprise. The places Saxony's story unfolds are real, they are places that I saw with my own eyes and which still materialize around me when I close my eyes. Venice had a torrid relationship with fire for many years. In spite of being built on a lagoon and surrounded by water, Venezia is actually incredibly flammable, and suffered from several great fires which destroyed whole boroughs. These fires were the reason the world-famous glass-blowers were eventually moved entirely to the northern island of Murano-to keep their dangerous ovens away from the brick constructions. Venice's beautiful churches, museums, and massive heritage villas were built not from the stone they appear to made from (those are actually facades), but rather with lighter and more flammable materials, in order to prevent sinking. This learning inspired me to combine fire with Venice and weave them together in a magical way for an audience who loves urban fantasy and stories of transformation. My main character, Saxony, is just like any regular highschool girl, but her summer spent in Venice changes the course of her life forever as she becomes essentially a goddess. I hope my story surprises and delights you, please don't be shy to reach out and let me know what you thought. I have more stories planned for Saxony, so I invite you to come along for the ride! Please click the 'Follow' button you can find below my author image to be notified of new releases.

AL Knorr's Elemental Origins novels have been a true pleasure. One if the reasons for this is how the author immerses her readers in the experience and locales of her stories. Along with this is how she ties this locale to the appropriate elemental power and relates it to her original twist on appropriate fantasy of mythology. Thus, first (for me at least, as these books truly can be read in any order) it was Born of Water's shipwreck in the Baltic and the author's take on mermaids, then, in Born of Earth, the beautiful Ireland and the Fae, and now, in born of Fire, Venezia and the Magi. It's really an impressive achievement, especially since each of these novels mirrors Born of Fire in having a great plot and wonderful lead and supporting characters. That's why, as I noted at the start, reading this book - and the series to date - has been a true pleasure.

From the little I read in the other books of the Origins of Elements, I knew that Saxony was going to have some temper. And indeed, we can wonder if the fire found Saxony or if Saxony found the fire. But one thing for sure, they get along just fine. But as happy as I was to discover the girl I also loved the new characters who appears in this book. Isaia was just adorable and I was actually very curious about Dante. Even if at the end the new intriguing character is Enzo. The friends that Saxony made during her stay in Italy might not always remind her of sweet memories, more something bitter-sweet, but what memories! This time the story was much more mysterious and secretive and I just loved that! This time the power of element came in a different form from the Earth and the Water. But it seems that it still got to deal with an amazing girl as AL Knorr loves to write them.So get cozy next to the fireplace (or the air-conditioning) and start read this. Be careful it’s highly addicting!

This is the second book in a series that focuses on four best friends who spend the summer before their senior year in high school apart - all abroad and secretly learning of their special affinities with a particular element. Each book follows one of the girls on her summer adventure, so the timelines of the books happen concurrently, but they can still be read out of order without much confusion. This is Saxony’s story. She’s spending the summer in Venice, Italy as an au pair to two young boys. Saxony is hoping to have some excitement and meet some good-looking Italian young men. She gets more than she bargained for in both areas.I liked that this was not a retread of Targa’s story but in a different locale. Saxony and Targa have very different personalities and they come into their elemental powers in very different ways. Even the love interest angles weren’t the same. Much like her character, Saxony’s story was not predictable. The book has a conclusion but with enough left to curiosity to make me want to continue reading the series. This was a fun YA read.

I love how Knorr makes me taste, see, and breathe her world. With a chillingly realistic villain and a protagonist who’s a true hero, I couldn’t get enough of Born of Fire. Eagerly awaiting the next Elemental Origins book.

I LOVE this series... It centers around a tight knit group of friends. Little do they know that ALL of them either currently have a massive secret, or soon will. In each book we see each of these friends who part during the summer for their own adventures discover something new and magical about themselves. Saxony is off to become a nanny for the summer in Europe. Her young charge is an amazing child who appears to be wasting every by the second. Little did she know that her love for this child coupled with her protective nature would cause a shift within her. Out of the blue she suddenly gains the elemental power of fire. If that's not freaky enough she has to quickly learn hot to survive... And the two guys she's drawn too aren't quite what they appear to be either. Danger, romance, secrets galore...see what happens to Saxony during this adventure filled summer. Will her friends ever believe her, or accept these new changes....and what will her own family think?! If you havent read book 1 yet, its not 100% neccessary, but it will give you some.backstory to help gain a richer perspective to this story. I look forward to reading the others in this BRILLIANT series!!!

A.L. Knorr has written a great second book in this series. It is about the next girl in the group of four friends. Saxony has an amazing experience in Italy that will change her life forever. One of the things I love about this author is how she makes the unbelievable very believable. I loved the first book very much. I started the second book as soon as I could doubting it could be as good. It was every bit as good, only different. I really can't wait to read a book about the third friend's summer.

This was such a fun book that I can't wait to read the rest of the series. A young girl goes to Italy to take care of a couple of little boys. There she not only gains a power, she learns to be more confident and to control her temper. I felt like I was experiencing Italy through her eyes. I hope to read more about her life being a Fire Magnus and a young girl.

The main character was different in the beginning, from the other series elementals. The author has unfolded an amazing story showing the 'strength' of caring for others; that brings out the best in you, and positively effects others in great and amazing ways. This power is shown to be greater than, and/or compliments the amazing powers of being an elemental. Thank you again. I have read the three other novels of the series. Each one is unique and very exciting. Looking forward to reading the next book coming out soon, Born of Air.
