I really enjoyed this book. I felt it was well written with enough plot twists to keep me wanting to read more. I enjoyed how the author used supernatural events to build the story line showing how God can and does work through individuals willing to be used by Him. I would have given the book 5 stars if not for one thing. I was saddened by the fact that the Lord's name was taken in vain several times through the book. In my opinion it was not necessary and added nothing to the book that could not have been said in a different manner.

I gave the book two stars because the characterization is realistic. From a literary standpoint, the book is slightly less shallow than a lot of what passes for Christian fiction these days. There are some plot details that are not wholly resolved at the end of the book, but that is typical of authors whose intent is to lure readers into purchasing the next book in the series. The Envelope is written from the perspective of Pentecostal/charismatic Christianity. The salvation experience consists of going forward during a church service, praying a prayer after the preacher, being touched by him on the forehead, and falling to the ground. The Gospel presentation is lukewarm. The book also includes faith healing. I found it disturbing that the Christian characters have no qualms about taking God’s name in vain. The author even mentions that they curse occasionally. It is ironic that she does not provide dialogue for the cursing but has no problem with providing dialogue for misusing the name of God. God’s name is holy. People do not use the names of their parents or friends in this light manner, but the author uses the name of God, whom she probably also calls “Father,” and Jesus, who is the “Friend of Sinners,” as if they have no meaning. “You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name” (Ex. 20:7, NIV).

Too much vulgarity, not enough substance!

Sheila and Hank both have traumatic incidents in their pasts that they keep secret, not realizing the roadblocks those secrets are to building their relationship and obeying God.Best bits: I appreciate how Hank's creative-goofball personality and Sheila's more structured personality compliment each other, and certainly neither one is shy about evangelizing -- they sound like a pretty excellent missionary couple. God is very real to the characters, even when, like Hank, they are ignoring him. Hanging on to secret guilt, like Sheila or especially Linda, is clearly a bad thing, as is refusing to obey God. And God uses even unlikely messengers, like a 5 year old girl.Issues: (Possible SPOILERS) I can understand Sheila's reluctance to confess she caused a child's death, though her angry avoidance every time someone even approaches the issue is not inspiring. It makes her come across as cold and harsh more than she would be otherwise. Hank's refusal to speak of his past in missions or the plane crash is harder to understand. I guess he's also weighed down by guilt and shame, but his only fault is in ignoring God's will afterward, which seems small compared to a child's death. Yet Sheila opens up about the accident and starts letting it go before Hank does, stubborn man. Some typos, a few which made me cringe. I feel like the book assumes all readers will have a familiarity with some of the more Pentecostal elements of Christianity, when I'm sure that's not the case. Some of the side plots I'm also not sold on -- the Miguel in love-hate with Sheila bit, the what's-going-on-with-Hank-and-Barbara bit, and Linda's terminal cancer. I'm not convinced these added to the story at all.

There are a lot of twists, turns, and stories within stories held between the pages of "The Envelope." You find yourself having a small niggling remembrance throughout your reading questioning, "but what does the envelope have to do with any of this?"Sheila is a pretty, private, emotionally self contained young woman. She is a Christian above all else. She is a teacher out of her element; perhaps because the Lord has another plan for her. She also has a tragic event in her past that is practically consuming her in its ugly wake.Hank, too a teacher; one you know is out of his element; understandably so as you remember his story; yet the Lord has a plan for Hank that's being fulfilled in his classroom. His love for the Lord is most evident in his life, yet you know he is holding back on his fulfillment of the Lord's plan for him.Again, stories with stories as the Lord weaves the tapestries of many lives in ways that only He can do. Lives that intertwine, sometimes uncomfortably so. You must read "The Envelope" to be reminded..we humans are His work, His plan, His puzzle of life to be placed together, piece by piece.Read and enjoy watching God's awesome powers through

Wow what a book! I've never read this author before, but gracious I love her style! This book, although at times a bit frustrating as it went along and Sheila's secret wasn't told, was nevertheless powerfully inspiring. I found myself pausing to just stare straight ahead as I pondered a deep truth or a point made to one of the characters. My own faith was encouraged and strengthened as I read. Also, I could identify in part some of the pain Sheila was going through. As a charismatic Christian, I loved the scenes in church and was thrilled to read a book that included things I've experienced myself... Healings, spiritual things, etc. This was a book that was hard to put down. I look forward to reading more by this author.

Ten years ago I decided to read all the books by Dr. Szasz, and now I have finished. I think that if I want to learn the ideas of Dr. Szasz I must read his works instead of what others write about him, however, this does not mean that books like this one are bad but biased. This is a book of what others think about the ideas of Dr. Szasz and not the ideas of Dr. Szasz himself, for those ideas you must to find them in his books. Per example Stephen Wilson wrote: " But a liar is someone who knowingly deceives, not someone who states a falsehood believing it to be true. By denying this distinction Szasz manages to “normalize” delusion and prevent it from mitigating personal responsibility." This is not true, Szasz never tried to normalize delusion as Wilson has put it, for Szasz a liar was a liar, and the so-called mentally ill patient was deliberately lying.Jan Pols disagree with Szasz regarding the Virchow's principle, he writes: " Nevertheless, this concept is inadequate, especially for family practice and clinical psychiatry, and to some extent dangerous, since it leads to unilateral focus on bodily lesions while losing sight of the person who is ill." Pols dismiss the views by Szasz in ""My Madness Saved Me The Madness and Marriage of Virginia Woolf" where the difference between psychoanalysis is drawn, and why Virginia Wolf chose Psychiatry (drugs) instead of psychoanalysis. In a personal communication with Dr. Szasz I asked him about what kind symptoms a person can have when quits off a psychiatric drug and he replied me in a way that I could understand that there are not "symptoms", the "symptoms" that the so-called mentally ill experiences before using a prescribed drug or when after using it, are not "symptoms" of a real disease, that is rebound withdrawal "symptoms" are the fake. How can Pols help those who experience withdrawal symptoms? Maybe with more psychiatry? Here lies the problem with psychiatry, people confuses non-medical psychiatry with psychiatry, psychiatrists use this confusion to drug their patients, that is why Szasz wanted to abolish Psychiatry. I do not include APA Standards in this review because I do not endorse the American Psychological Association nor its Standards.Eric v.d Luft addresses the topics in philosophy, but avoids the topics in psychiatry, he dismisses "The Manufacture of Madness" as one of the best writings by Szasz, he wrote "it is unfortunate that Popper influenced Szasz" and describes the differences between Popper and Szasz works, he criticizes that Szasz never quoted properly and goes beyond suggesting that Szasz should be quoting Cassirer instead of Langer. He added: " Greeks in general and Plato in the Phaedrus in particular associated "madness with inspiration" and "illumination" rather than with "illness" Dr. Luft does not take in consideration "My Madness Saved Me, The Madness and Marriage of Virginia Woolf" where Szasz writes about this topic in particular and asserts that Szasz "builds his theory on his own foundations, not on foundations laid by others" which is really not true, the fact that some authors decide to quote other authors do not mean that they should be in agreement with them in everything. Luft quotes Hobbes and tell us that Hobbes is no friend of the rich, Luft writes: "Hobbes, although an advocate for the powerful, especially the monarch, whom he holds inviolable and above the law, is no friend of the rich, as he writes in Chapter 27:“to rob a poor man, is a greater crime, than to rob a rich man; because ’tis to the poor a more sensible damage” (Hobbes, 1972, p.352). From the nineteen laws of nature that Hobbes enumerates regarding war and peace (Chapters 14 and 15), we readily infer that the rich are the natural targets of the poor, the “haves” of the “have-nots,” but not the powerful of the weak. Dr. Luft does not provide a direct quote from the Chapters 14 and 15 but his opinion about the work of Hobbes instead of Dr. Szasz and his book "Insanity The Idea and its Consequences" .

One of the most influential books I ever read on swimming. I've re-read it every couple years for the last 6 or 7 years. Some of the best minds in swimming drop knowledge in each chapter. Strongly recommend for any coach, wherever they are at in their coaching careers.

Not current enough. Many of the ideas seemed 30 or more years old.

This is a great book to break down everything for a new coach. It's an amazing resource even for veteran coaches.

This book is great. Full of good advice and information. It truely is my bible; I refer to it often. I recommend it to any and all swim coaches.

Exactly as expected

I bought Swim Coach Bible vol. I & II, and I don't regret it at all. These editions are brilliant. Definitely a must-have for every dedicated swim coach.

I use this book to coach my kids swimming. It is a very detail book with lots of drills and explanation. The reason I give it 4 stars is that if they can add some real photo for stroke anatomy, it would be great.

I have enjoyed this book very much...It covers just about everything you would want to know from parents to swimmers to the coaches, it covers a very large range of people and a lot of information that is very useful and easy to apply...I see myself in the future referring back to this book over and over again
