I bought this book after being a fan of his fiction work for several years and I am very much in love with it. The collection of essays, musings and interviews included will give you some insight into an incredibly interesting and surprisingly inspiring person. The only downside and disappointment is I came to regret I will sadly never get to hear him speak live!

Douglas Adams was always a favorite of mine. His wit was askew, just when you thought you knew where he was going he'd change lanes and take you somewhere else. His interests were eclectic, he didn't pretend to understand things he didn't understand. If I learned anything from his writings, it would be that the Universe is not only larger and more complex than we (humankind) generally think it is, it's much larger and more complex than we could ever comprehend.Losing Adams was sad. He (probably) had quite a lot more to say. In The Salmon Of Doubt his friends went through his drawers and shoeboxes (well, his computer files, actually) and collected all the yet-to-published thoughts and musings, and added their own personal tributes to their friend.In a way, Adams lives. In the hearts and minds of those who respected, admired, and loved him. We should all hope for such and ending.

I love all of Douglas Adams actual books, but this posthumously published collection of miscellanea from his hard drives was not one of his finely tuned works of art. Some of the short articles and stories by Adams that were included in this book were quite interesting and gave me insights on the man that his real books did not. The beginning chapters of the unfinished "The Salmon of Doubt" that were included were intriguing, but it was clearly only the beginning of a story that might not even have been outlined in the author's mind. Some of the articles were quite rough and not thoroughly thought out. Adams probably would not have wished them to be published. The volume also included many personal items of praise for Adams that would not be of interest to general readers. I felt them to be a waste of time. This book is probably intended only for very hard-core Adams lovers.

Not at all related to H2G2. But clever and delightful novel from Douglas Adams. If you know of his work, you would have already read this. If you have discovered his work, this is worthy of a read. I found myself grieving at the end of this book - all teary-eyed and sniffling - it felt like I was saying a final good bye to a dear friend. This was Adams's last book - compiled and arranged in the year after his death by his friends and editors. Coming to the end of Salmon of Doubt, and realizing there'd be no more words written by Adams, was really hard for me. I loved this book. The humor, the whimsy, Adams's unique take on the world - it was all there. I wish I'd gotten to know his writing while he was here with us - and I'm so sorry he no longer is.Karen Molenaar Terrell

This book was everything I expected. I was really looking for a humorous sci-fi action packed trip and I was not disappointed at all. Reading this book was similar to the experience I got from the movie Men In Black. The Guide is similar in the way it depicts the univers as simply a zany place to be, full of action and swashbuckling adventure interspersed with a funny undertone. Ive read books before that followed this sort of humourous angle, but mostly turned out to be silly. The Hitchhiker's Guide may not have the most developed characters, but it has a unique charm that draws you into the action and keeps you there with a laugh and leaves you with a cliffhanger ending. The best time to read this book is right after you've just read something overly serious, epic, boring, or studious. Another book I would recommend that has this same similar sci-fi/humor relationship is a book by Piers Anthony called Prostho Plus. Pick up this book, but consider investing in the novel that encompasses all three books in the trilogy. Surely, if you only read this one, you will want more.

He left us much, much too soon, but he seems also to have left a lot of wonderful material on his beloved Apple hard drive. This collection, brilliantly read by Simon Jones, and introduced by Christopher Cerf, Stephen Fry and others, reaches broadly to give us Adams' commentary on the real world and imagination of the world he made for all of us. To my taste, his essays on science and the environment are the most delightful, but the one on the Beatles is pretty wonderful too!The eulogies that begin the series are melancholy, because they remind us that Douglas Adams is gone, but they also show facets that those of us who knew his writings but never had the pleasure of meeting the man might have guessed were there, but for which we now have evidence.Thank goodness we have one more chance to hop a Vorlon space freighter with him.

I have worked for the federal government for many years and, unfortunately, what the author says is consistent with my own experience. I was shocked to see the level of dishonesty and corruption in the way the government conducts and funds "science." While I have great faith in the scientific method when practiced correctly, I have come to have very little faith in the integrity of our scientific establishment as it exists today, especially the biomedical sciences. This lack of scientific integrity is very damaging to our society.What might be the saddest and most frightening thing, though, is that those who try to point out and expose this lack of integrity are so often attacked as being anti-science. In fact, the opposite is true: they want honest, objective science.I commend the author for his courage and his commitment to being a true "public servant," even at the expense of his own career.

This book is for everyone. Scientists, academia, farmers, rural and urban residents need to know how a nationwide waste management program can impact the health of everyone, but especially children. Dr. Davis takes us inside the US Environmental Protection Agency and how the scientists there have been silenced by corporate interests by political mandates to make all environmental policies under a "cost-benefit analysis." Unfortunately, the only "person" who will benefit from this method of regulatory decisions will be corporate interests and local governments. This book uncovers the dirty secrets that allows toxic sewage sludge municipal waste to be spread and sprayed on farmlands that may grow your food or food for the animals you eat. Nobody is exempt from the impacts of thousands of synthetic chemicals mixed together and condensed in the sewage sludge that may even be taken to another "Class A" level that will allow this toxic mixture to be put in your garden, your yard, the school playgrounds, parks, and all public places. The EPA was under pressure by Congress to quickly find a way for municipalities to get rid of their sewage sludge that was being dumped into the oceans. When condoms, needles, and other items started washing ashore in NJ, the folks got right angry. Congressional investigation showed that the places that the sewage was dumped into the ocean were dying and marine life was nil. So, the EPA Administration, without the backing and approval of their own scientists in the Office of Research and Development, decided sewage sludge that killed marine life would be good as fertilizer for farmland in 1993.This book tells about what happens when scientists with honor and integrity try to stand up to EPA Administration and government to try to protect human health. The scientists are fired, maligned, sued, and generally given the boot. However, heroes come in all shapes and sizes and Dr. Lewis is one of our nation's heroes. Not only did he discover that dental equipment was not being cleaned sufficiently to kill HIV and other pathogens and get dentists world wide to change procedures for sterilizing instruments, he became a whistleblower after being fired from the EPA after 30 years of outstanding scientific contributions. This gentle, soft spoken very intelligent man deserves our kudos and respect while we figure out how to protect ourselves from the toxic environment the EPA has mandated for disposal of municipal sewage sludge that impacts our air, water, and food.

Having experienced the rath of our EPA on our "Organic Enzyme Cleaner" and sent to virtual bankruptcy, this book is telling the truth regarding how our government is not the government that We The People believe it to be... it is constructed of agencies directly and indirectly loyal to and responsible to US CORPORATIONS! Great read and truthful read!

Great information, but terrible editing. The author is very repetitive about the biosolids issue. Thus, it wasn't very enjoyable to read. However, it's still an important book about our government's dishonesty and corruption in how it destroys the careers of scientists who dare to investigate the safety of some of it's practices. Much of this book is reminiscent of Marie-Monique Robin's "The World According to Monsanto" where the government destroyed the careers of scientists who investigated glyphosate safety.Dr. Lewis does seem to side with Dr. Wakefield and how he was (perhaps unfairly) ousted, but just because Dr. Wakefield was considered a fraud does that mean that nobody is daring to do any further research into vaccine safety? That seems troubling to me, especially because I personally know 2 people who have gotten Guillain-Barre syndrome from vaccines (one was from a H1N1 flu shot that was rushed into production in the 2009-2010 flu season scare, and another who got GBS from a tetanus vaccine after slicing her foot on a seashell), and I do NOT have a wide social circle. GBS isn't so rare if I know 2 people with it, but it's disturbing that no scientists are even testing vaccines for safety, as the matter is already settled.Nevertheless, I recommend this book! Just skim through the repetitive parts.

Very good book. Unfortunately I'm no longer surprised by government corruption. I'm glad this scientist had the strength to question the status quo, which is to dump chemicals that are illegal to dump into water or air, into our soil instead! They put chemicals in mulch, on playgrounds, on farms. Holy hell what are people thinking? The pull towards the dollar must be very strong in a lot of people. I like Suzie Ormond s comment best....people first, then money. If every one lived that way, we wouldn't have to fight so hard for clear air, water, soil etc.

Ok but not applicable for girls outside of a normal socio-economic status and caucasian ethnicity or culture.

Rather than attempting to be a comprehensive, overbearing, 'cover to cover fix' for all teen problems, author Lucie Hemmen has chosen to focus in on 10 key problems teen girls face. The use of young adults to recount the things that did and didn't work for them paired with 'exercises' at the back work together to make a friendly tone that doesn't talk down to teens. As a parent, I found the book to be quite good. For my 12 year old, who is about transition into middle school from 6th grade, she found it useful to identify areas/issues that could become very problematic in coming years. The results of doing the CBT-themed exercises were surprising.The book breaks down into 10 'tips': Know what you bring to the party, Leave your comfort zone, Increase contact, Nurture connections, Weed out negative social habits, Communicate through conflict, Communicate for closeness, Be your best self in social media and texting, Be more and think less, Practice balance.All topics are rooted in CBT (cognitive behavior therapy): being mindful rather than instinctual as well as writing down thoughts/ideas. As such, there is a lot of 'extra' work in each chapter of actually writing things such as "positive thoughts today' or "qualities my friends like in me". Fortunately, they aren't daunting and written well to be interesting.Overall, the focus is on being confident and true to oneself as well as developing positive interpersonal skills (e.g., being involved and having great friends). This is more for your average teen girl rather than a very troubled one having issues with sex and drugs at a young age. It's more about building than fixing, in that respect.My daughter and I have read other CBT type books but I feel this one has a great balance of applicability to brevity. It doesn't try to cover too much and isn't so wordy that it talks down to teens. The author cleverly uses examples from older girls to make a lot of the points and then summarizes them to drive the points home. The exercises turn that information into direct applicability to each teen so the concepts are no longer general or nebulous.In all, both my daughter and I found the book to be very helpful and useful. I got this for my niece before she enters her freshmen year of high school. She's had some issues with two-faced friends and really enjoyed the book and it's perspective.

Would recommend for pre teen girls

Gift for a shy young lady who just turned 13. She appreciated it.

I think this book is more for high school girls. I bought it for my 12 year old granddaughter and I think it may be a little over her head at this point. Oh well, if she reads it now, she'll be well prepared for high school.

Using for my Girl Scouts so far so good
