A well written story that put you right in the scene, Postcards from a Stranger had me guessing until the very end. Ms Clark manipulated the clues so this was the case, but I must admit, I missed one vital piece of foreshadowing, so pay attention. It is the kind of book that burns slowly, yet I couldn't wait to get five minutes peace so I could read a few more chapters. And the story doesn't sugar coat anything, especially the highs and lows of marriage, and the loneliness of caring for an elderly parent. Most of all, the writing is great. I love it when authors take every day situations and weave a tale around them, without resorting to cliches and dramatics. It brings back memories that are long forgotten and makes you think and reminisce. And the epilogue was a nice touch.Great read.

This is a pretty nonsensical book. It hypes up a big mystery that you can see coming from a mile away. All the women in it are weak and feel useless, all of them physically or psychologically abused. There is very little nuance or depth of any character. Only the structure (moving from the main character’s first person narration to her mother’s, depending upon the chapter) keeps you going. Halfway through I wanted to quit but thought maybe there would be a pay-off. There wasn’t.I’d genuinely hate to occupy a world like the one the author has so unwittingly shown to be her view of the world and motherhood.Avoid.

I like the way this author tells a story and the storyline was suspenseful until the story unfolded. I found myself skipping parts because of the content topic. I was sad that the main character makes custom wedding gowns but I never know if she wore one of her creations. There were parts of this booked that I really liked but the other parts left me not recommending it to a friend.

Vvery heart wrenching story of emotional and mental and or physical abuse from the male roles in Annie and cara's life and how they struggled to overcome grief and reach forgiveness and love and peace in their lives and overcome the obstacles life threw at them.

A great story - could not put it down! Unfortunate that lies and deceit rob the people of much precious time to be spent with relatives! However all added to the intrigue of the story line!

This book truly made me ponder on the issues and the way things have changed since the 70's and 80's. Good plot line.

I enjoyed this book a lot. Will read more from this writer.

Most interesting story! Enjoyed readying it! I liked the surprise ending!

No Irrelevant Jesus: On Jesus and the Church Today, by Gerhard Lohfink

Review

No Irrelevant Jesus is composed of short talks Lohfink has given over the years that are filled with exegetical and theological wisdom. . . . Lohfink is a German determined not to forget the terror that was Nazi Germany. This book is also relevant for the challenges facing Christians in America. His is a vision, deeply grounded in scripture, that I believe is our future. Stanley Hauerwas, Gilbert T. Rowe Professor Emeritus of Divinity and Law, Duke University The Christian CenturyGerhard Lohfink is to theology what Flannery O'Connor is to literature: a voice calling us to be aware of what really matters. O'Connor shouts to a culture deaf to grace; Lohfink confronts anyone trying to tame and domesticate Jesus. Modern-day prophets they are.Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus Robert F. Morneau, Diocese of Green Bay, WisconsinGerhard Lohfink not only demonstrates that Jesus and his church are unquestionably relevant for life today, his essays also offer readers clear and theologically wise responses to critical issues of our day. While his writing is solid and sophisticated, it is accessible to scholar and seeker alike. Brilliantly written and translated, this work should be on the reading list of everyone interested in updating their understanding of Jesus and his church with fresh and stimulating insights.Stephen J. Binz, independent scholar, speaker, and author of biblical theology and spiritualityNo Irrelevant Jesus by Gerhard Lohfink is an excellent complement to the author's Jesus of Nazareth. It highlights the mystery of Jesus Christ and his message in relation to the church's nature and mission. Speaking to general readers as well as to scholars, it illumines the living Lord's "good news" in its biblical setting and also in the context of our contemporary world. Its short, clear, down-to-earth essays challenge us to orient our lives and the church to the coming of God's reign.Robert A. Krieg, Professor of Theology, University of Notre DameFollowing his highly successful Jesus of Nazareth, Gerhard Lohfink delivers another stunning achievement with this passionate set of essays about why Jesus remains relevant. Originally a series of public lectures, the chapters retain their oral flair, reflected in the excellent translation. They also impart a wealth of sophisticated information on a variety of themes tied to Jesus and his ministry: miracles, the love commandment, salvation, sin and reconciliation, the nature of the church, the episcopacy, and more. This book demonstrates once more Lohfink's eminent status as a seasoned scholar who nonetheless has the ability to communicate a meaningful pastoral message. In short, a superb book on Jesus' significance for the church today!Ronald D. Witherup, SS, Superior General of the Society of the Priests of Saint Sulpice and author of Saint Paul and the New EvangelizationGerhard Lohfink’s work, No Irrelevant Jesus, seeks to make Jesus and His Church relevant in the contemporary culture that reduces Jesus and Christianity to one religion that is equal to all others. The book is a collection of essays from oral presentations that Lohfink made during the past several years that he later realized centered around the theme of making Jesus and/or His Church relevant today. . . . His work exhibits a mastery over the material that he has sought to understand throughout his life and it shares many theological themes found in his other work Jesus of Nazareth. Jason Bermender, Catholic Books ReviewGerhard Lohfink is a superb scholar and a beautiful writer who helped many readers see the Son of God in an entirely new light with his brilliant book Jesus of Nazareth. Now, in a series of wise, provocative, and inspiring essays, backed by vast learning and deep prayer, Lohfink reveals Jesus as he was and is, and the church as it was and is meant to become.James Martin, SJ, Author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage“With his succinct treatment of complex topics, Lohfink writes with his customary level of scholarly depth. When a writer or a speaker knows their material and has had years of experience in sharing it with others, there simply is a sense of “gravitas” or trustworthiness to their writing. . . . As Lohfink sketches the “untamed” Jesus, he moves freely between biblical texts, ancient writers, modern theologians and expressions of contemporary culture. . . . Everyone who takes the time to read and ponder this book will be challenged to new depths of discipleship and alerted to new possibilities as we live into the arrival of God’s kingdom already present in Christ and his Church.”                Michael J. Bowling                Englewood Review of Books

Ms Maloney has provided an excellent translation of Fr. Lofink's excellent sequel to his "Jesus of Nazareth" by illustrating how Jesus's Gospel message can be applied today. Thus, he illustrates how miracles, his message of love and the reign of God are still relevant. He also expands his discussions to include insights into the theology of St. Paul, and how effects of the ancient world impacted the message of Christ-lovers. He also discusses the nature of divine revelation, and how the Judeo-Christian tradition differs from other religions, and how these differences may impact of modern thinking. No Irrelevant Jesus provided valuable insight into how Christianity most appropriately fits with the modern world.

After reading Jesus of Nazareth I was primed for more and more. I haven't finished the book yet but have found it magnificently informative. If Christians are meant to follow Christ's teachings, they need to understand what they are. As a catholic christian I am able to say that this is not a feel-good kind of church and it shouldn't be. I love the way Lohfink is able to explain the church from its infancy but also cogniscient of our need to look at life now and be open to changes in practice while staying in line with the mission we have been given.

Great book. Lohfink pushes back against the idea that Jesus is not relevant in the modern world. Chapter 1 is entitled "On Not Taming Jesus". In this chapter and elsewhere Lohfink says that Jesus cannot be reduced to a mere social worker. He can't be trimmed to meet ideological agendas but must be accepted in the Fullness of His Divinity with all His demands for us. His demands free us and open up to us the possibility of joy. God's Mercy is Unfathomable and no human being should despair of it as long as he or she lives. But I find statements like the following in the book refreshing:"Jesus is tamed and made irrelevant in a terrible way ... when his preaching of judgment, which makes up a significant portion of the gospel tradition, is ignored and there is talk only of the loving and tender Jesus. ... Jesus is tamed when it becomes taboo to speak of his celibacy. It was not accidental and not a matter of fate; it is connected with his absolute devotion to the people of God. ... Jesus is also tamed when we sharply criticize the treatment of divorced and remarried persons by Rome and yet keep silent about the altogether clear and thoroughly well-attested words of Jesus against divorce. Can we no longer see that here the Catholic Church is trying to remain true to Jesus, despite all the difficulties it causes for the church? The solution of this difficult and complex question, on which many points of view must be considered, can at any rate not be achieved by putting aside or whitewashing Jesus' demand (pp. 17,18)."Lest Lohfink be reduced to only a conservative, he also speaks for social justice throughout the book. It's time for Catholics to stop dividing themselves ideologically into conservatives, moderates, or liberals, and become Fully CATHOLIC, which does not fit 100% into any ideological/political agenda.

What to make of Lohfink? He can be tedious, long-winded and boring. Some pages made my eyes glaze over. Maybe it's a translation issue. And yet ...when he gets going he has so much to teach me. If you can sit through the uninspired sections you should be rewarded with some refreshing, even unique theological insights.I will, with some trepidation, no doubt read his next book also.

Once again Lofhink has come thru with a solid meaty book on Jesus. This book brings some real challenges to all believers of every Christian denomination. What is Jesus really trying to say to us today? Lohfinlk spells it out clearly and challenges every one of us to understand that to follow Jesus is no easy thing.

A biblical and contemporary treatment of Jesus. Worth reading

Scholaryly but put in language for the person in the pew!

The first 1/3 of the book is good. If you are not of the Roman Catholic persuasion this part of the book contains only bits and pieces that are specifically oriented to the RC tradition. The other 2/3 of the book has some good material, but is much more oriented to the RC tradition. This shouldn't be too surprising as the author is a priest.

Angel Island, gateway to Gold Mountain by Russel FreedmanKnow of Ellis island and never thought of one on the west coast and we' stood at north end of Golden Gate Bridge and saw the island for ourselves without even knowing what it was.Enjoyed all the history especially carvings on the walls that have been preserved.I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

This is a fascinating book. A pictorial and written history of the many different nationalities coming to America from the Pacific for entrance into the United States through Angel Island, the Ellis Island of the West Coast. Although these immigrants were from many countries, the early majority were from China. New immigrants were housed in separate barracks for men and women, with families being split. They were housed in barracks with barred windows and behind barbed wire enclosures. They were often stripped and went through thorough medical examinations and were either sent to the holding barracks or deported, if they could not pass the examination. Immigrants often spent weeks or months before being interrogated for a decision to be made, to either be allowed to enter the United States or be deported. Congress had passed laws to restrict Chinese, Japanese, and Asian immigrants from entering the United States. These immigrants were subjected to harsh discrimination and treatment by many Caucasian citizens due to competition for jobs. This book gives many translations of poems and sayings by these immigrants carved on the barracks walls during their interment. It also gives the history of how members of the Asian American community formed the Angel Island Immigration Historical Advisory Committee and lobbied the California legislature for funds to restore the site. Angel Island is now an historical site that anyone can visit, to tour the Detention Barracks Museum and see the beautiful preserved poems that are etched into every barracks wall. This is such an important detailed look into the almost forgotten history of the early entry of immigrants to the United States by means of the Pacific Ocean, with special emphasis of the Chinese, Japanese, Russian, and persecuted Jewish Immigrants to America, known by the Chinese as Gold Mountain.

Angel Island was a short but informative read. Although it was mostly about Angel Island, it gave a lot of background informative that helped give the reader a better sense of who these people were and what there life was like before during and after Angel Island. I especially found that the black and white photos provided every few pages were helpful, because they made me feel like I was there and it gave me a better visual. Unlike some other literature that I have read, this book did not try to sugarcoat the true story of Angel Island and kept it as factual as possible. There were even some quotes from immigrants and travelers who experienced the hardships of Angel Island from time to time. Overall, I think that this was an enjoyable and factual book that I recommend to young readers. -Alessia Turner, a 7th Grade Student

Wonderful book. Lots of pictures. I have Asian friends and never heard of Angel Island. I will have to ask them about it. Very educational for all ages.

As expected. Good reference for kids.

It was a great book of historic happenings; I never thought I could enjoy history book like I did "Angel Island."

Today Angel Island is a leisure-time destination. Approach by ferry, seaplane, schooner, helicopter or hot air balloon.Take the tram, hike, bike, picnic, segway....enjoy the scenic views. But this book -- with its archival photographs, poignant poems, and honest interviews -- reveals the historic Angel Island, the Ellis Island of the West. Although aimed at the 9 - 12 year old reader, this informative book will appeal to adult readers as well.Chapters:Where the Walls SpeakBound for Gold MountainAngel Island or Devil's Island?Waves as Big as MountainsLife in the Detention BarracksThe InterrogationPicture Brides, Freedom Fighters, and RefugeesA Nation of ImmigrantsVisiting Angel IslandFreedman writes with respect and compassion. Highly recommended.

It's not a celebration of a model minority at all but it is Chinese-heavy with maybe about five pages about Japan and two on Korea but this does illuminates the situation of the different immigrants by mentioning the FACT that Japan had invaded and refused to leave Korea at the time of the Korean immigration. The paper is newsprint so it's a little offputting but the content is neutral and informative.

A Fine Mess: A Global Quest for a Simpler, Fairer, and More Efficient Tax System, by T. R. Reid

Review

“[C]harming… Reid takes us on a world tour of tax systems and the efforts to reform them. He approaches this most disliked specialty of the dismal science of economics with a wry voice and a light touch… a rich and sturdy fabric of facts presented in plain English. As a longtime Washington Post foreign correspondent, Reid knows how to make the distant seem close. His eye for the telling detail is sharp… Those unfamiliar with economics, accounting or tax law will be better able to understand these subjects by reading “A Fine Mess.”… With enough readers, Reid might even help us to initiate real tax reform by replacing a tax code so complex it includes the anti-complexity rule in Section 7803(c)(2)(B).”—David Cay Johnston, The New York Times Book Review“A fun book on taxes. It's terrific.”—Fareed Zakaria, CNN's Global Public Square“An exploration of the absurd complexity of the American tax system and an astute comparison to many examples of simpler, effective tax collection by other governments around the world.  Throughout his well-reported, clearly written exposé of United States tax policy, [Reid] reveals the follies of the concept of American exceptionalism and the misguided pride of presidents, members of Congress, and Internal Revenue Service commissioners….Though Reid's topic may be anathema to many readers, he makes it relentlessly revelatory and simple to understand.”—Kirkus Reviews [starred]“Highly readable and informative…offers solid solutions and predicts the time for change has come.”— Publishers Weekly

Probably the finest book on tax policy I have ever read. Following the lead of his earlier book "The Healing of America," Reid takes us around the world showing us how other nations raise the cash needed to run a government. Some nations have some really good ideas we can learn from. The author includes the clearest-ever explanation of how a Value-Added Tax works. Those pages alone are worth the price of the book.It is about time for America to re-write its tax code. This book helps you understand the underlying issues.

Okay, you pay taxes, but do you understand systems of taxation? Probably not. I did not, but now I do. Not the details of tax laws, but the big picture: BBLR (broad based, low(er) rates), flat income rate versus graduated income rates, sales tax versus VAT (value added tax), the differences among tax deductions, exclusions and credits, and much more. Sounds like dull reading? It’s not! Reid includes much humor with his clear explanations and documents that the US is “one nation, under-taxed,” compared to most other countries with developed economies. I recommended this book to two book clubs I belong too. Despite much initial skepticism, the book was a hit in both clubs. If you think income inequality is a world problem, then you must understand taxation, which is by far the best way to address the problem. Every political candidate and every voter should read this book. And perhaps reread it, as I did, with pleasure both times.

Great book on understanding the current tax environment and how the tax code has changed over the years. Reid makes some good arguments and provides rational details and evidence to back up his claims. Although you might think Taxes would be a dry subject, I recommend reading the first few pages and see if you like it. It is presented in an entertaining manner and only took me a few days to read.

The US is ready for a tax overhaul. Mr Reid makes the case for BBLR taxation. No exemptions and everything is taxed at a lower rate. And VAT, seriously what is wrong with the US that we aren't doing this? Comprehensive, well written, and easily absorbed discourse on our current ineffective tax systems and effective tax systems of other countries.

Great summary of tax policy in various countries, particularly during modern history (especially the US). However, if you stay up on tax policy debates, you're likely to find a lot that you already know. That said, the book is well written and chock full of facts.

I have always liked T.R. Reid's commentary on National Public Radio, but this is the first book I've read by him. I found it to be clear, interesting, and informative about the American tax system. He also covers the taxation of many other countries. Mr. Reid has a way of making a dry topic almost fun to read. And it's especially timely since Congress is at this moment discussing major tax reform. I didn't give it a five because there are few books that I "love". I did like this one a lot and do recommend it, but I didn't love it.....

A good book for summarizing all the problems with the American taxing system and at least proposing some solutions. After reading this you will be, not just appear, very knowledgeable about tax policy. You'll be the star of the next dinner party. The conclusions are to go to a US VAT and make all taxes broad based and low rates, or BBLR as in the tax expert jargon. Unfortunately, never gonna happen. Too many sacred cows as he points out in our income tax system. He does spend a little time describing the return free filing systems that most other developed countries use. Since we'll never change the tax code, let's go to simplification. Kudos to the Tax Advocate, Nina Olson, for her work. I use her office to resolve mundane processing matters and it works. I used to be a CPA and now prepare taxes for the IRS VITA program. Nearly all the taxpayers we see should not even have to come in. The IRS already knows everything. I have 100 year old widows come in in wheelchairs to only sign their name. What a waste of time. Brookings has a good site about return free filing. Google it. This book should be required reading in any civics class, as money makes the government run and taxes are how it gets that money.

I was pleasantly surprised at how much I learned from this book. It is an easy read, too. I don't necessarily agree with all of the author's opinions, but I'm close.
