Having driven the bogus religious cult known as the Outsiders from the shores of Hibernia, Halt, Will and Horace are in pursuit of of the cult's dangerous leader. Tennyson, along with a small band of his core followers, eluded the Araluen heroes in Clonmel and, although they managed to thwart his plan to gain control of Hibernia, Halt, Will and Horace won't rest easy until Tennyson has been captured and brought to justice. As they chase signs and rumors of Tennyson and his band of thugs across the sea to Picta and from there into Araluen, they are on constant watch for signs that the outlaws have passed before them. After a short side trip to drive a band of Scotti raiders back across the border, the trio manages to regain the trail of the Outsiders. But luck is not on their side. Tennyson's remaining pair of Genovesan assassins spot the two Rangers and the young warrior who accompanies them and set an ambush that may cost Halt his life. With Halt wounded and weakened, Will must find a way to complete the mission and save Halt at the same time.I am constantly astounded by the quality of the writing Mr. Flanagan has been able to sustain over the many books of The Ranger's Apprentice series. Halt's Peril is the ninth tale featuring Will, Halt and Horace and like each of the eight novels before it, the story is engrossing, taut with tension and peopled with characters that capture the imagination.

Oh, man. I'm not sure how to rate this book. A four-and-a-quarter? five? four-and-a-half? Eesh. I'm going with five, just because this is one of those actually GOOD series which interests boys, who don't have the best range of engaging books right now. There are boys I know who hate to read, but love this series.I live in America, and was VERY excited when I learned there's a company that imports from Australia; the book's not out here until October 5th. I really enjoyed this book, but I would have made two changes; 1) I would have mashed the first three chapters into one. It would help the beginning flow of the book a LOT. 2) I would have extended the beginning of one of the chapters, as it mystifies the reader, and would be much better if it kept the suspense up a little longer.I read this book two times the first day I got it, a third time the next day, a fourth and fifth the next, and then just read it whenever I could wrest it away from my two younger siblings. If you are a hopeless romantic (not meaning love scenes, but drama) with a vivid imagination and a thirst for adventure and humor, as I am, this is the book for you.Again, this is an engaging and thrilling read, and it interests even my brother, who is not known for his biblophilia. Be forewarned, however; it does move a little slow in places, but that seems to just make the other bits even more interesting, especially the times when Will comes close to cracking. After all, nobody likes watching their mentor die.I was a little disappointed that the Black O' Malley was not really Sir Keren; it would have opened up quite a few possibilities if he had survived Macindaw, by some miracle. I mean, come on, a major face-off between Will and someone he thought was already dead? Still, the way he was forced to give them information was quite intruiging. I'm going to shut up now, and go and find that book to read it for the... eighth? ninth? tenth time?Bring on the tenth book! And the eleventh! And the twelveth! And the - you get the idea.

"Halt's Peril" is Book 9 in the Ranger's Apprentice series by John Flanagan. I've read the previous 8 books and absolutely love this series. The characters are believable, the books are well written, and there are a lot of unexpected plot twists. While I enjoyed "Halt's Peril," it just wasn't as good as the previous books. The pace was just slower then the others. I won't ruin the plot, but this continues where Book 8 left off: Halt, Horace and Will are chasing Tennyson, the leader of the cult known as the "Outsiders." As the title suggests, something happens to Halt and the others must see to it that he is saved. A big part of this book involved camping and horse riding scenes. While still a good read, the action is less intense and it takes longer for things to develop. Overall I'd highly recommend the entire series to anyone, just don't expect this one to be as good as the others.

With much of the action in the previous book this book is a race to catch to catch the antagonist. While there is no big battles they are intense scenes filled with action and danger. This book is a little slower than the others but still well worth the read. Flanagan continues to produce stories which you are not quite sure what happened the first time through. There is even a point in which he brings back a little bit of the fantasy feeling that was in the first book .

John Flanagan has written a great adventure, complete with death defying action and near disaster. Thoroughly enjoyable reading. Well done John.

This was exactly like a totally awesome rollarcoaster ride. Everytime you think something was going to happen the way that you thought was going to happen; the author does another 180 degree turn rollar coaster ride and zips you the complete opposite way. Fast; explosive action book almost like a live action thriller movie. Keeps you on the edge of your seat; and your like. Hey wait! Whats gonna happen next? I seriously cant wait until the very next book. Live action thriller; and yet; you almost wished you could have friends like will; Horace; and halt; willing yo to anything for you. I know I do. This book really makes you think about stuff like that you know?

I thoroughly enjoy John Flanagan. His work is fast paced and seems to sweep you along with Will, Halt, and Horace. This series is excellent for those who love the middle ages, dungeons and dragons, and just people who like heroes who stand up to the bad guys instead of wimps who wonder why things are like they are and if they should get involved. These guys step up and make a difference.

Review

“[A] thoughtful analysis of America’s War on Terror.” —The New Yorker “Offers a very persuasive argument for the best way to counter jihadism.”—The Washington Post“[Reza] Aslan dissects a complex subject (terrorism and globalization) and distills it with a mix of narrative writing, personal anecdotes, reportage and historical analysis.”—San Francisco Chronicle“Aslan is not only a perspicuous, thoughtful interpreter of the Muslim world but also a subtle psychologist of the call to jihad.”—Los Angeles Times “[A] meaty analysis of the rise of Jihadism . . . dispels common misconceptions of the War on Terror age.”—San Jose Mercury News “It is Aslan’s great gift to see things clearly, and to say them clearly, and in this important new work he offers us a way forward. He is prescriptive and passionate, and his book will make you think.”—Jon Meacham, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of American Lion

This book continues where "No god but God" left off, providing a detailed analysis of political Islam, and showing how it differs from orthodox forms of the religion. The parts I found most interesting were the discussions of the impact of colonialism on both Islamic cultures and the psyche of individual Muslims. A must read for anyone hoping to understand the roots of both violent and non-violent forms of extremism.

A very interesting but now somewhat dated book about religious fundamentalism and what motivates the people who join these movements. The book was completed just as Barack Obama was beginning his presidency. I'd like to see an updated version of these ideas Reza Aslan writes about.Essentially the author contends that radical religious fundamentalists of all stripes are not interested in defeating and ending their fight, but continuing an unending war of good versus evil. They have no plan for after the war. Although his observations seem to fit the Al Qaida model, I'm not sure whether it fits the ISIS model. Author Aslan is a keen and knowledgeable observer of religious extremism. His thoughts and writings are well worth reading and pondering.

This is an excellent book highly recommended as it clarifies many issues surrounding misunderstood terms like Islamists versus for instance jihadists or ISIL. The author has good historical and objectively written accounts of the formation of the state of Israel and the correspondingly complex issues which revolve around its survival as a nation amidst very conflicting Arab sentiments.

Aslan presents a picture of the fundamentalist' s worldview, and demonstrates how it is common in every fundamentalist group, regardless of belief system. He describes the origins of mistrust and hatred that lead to fundamentalism, and offers actions that can defuse the destructive results of it. More than ever, it is important to bring people with disparate belief systems into the public arena, to empower them as part of the governing process. Where the radical minorities have been made part of the decision making process, participation in violent, underground movements has decreased.A book worth reading.

Prof. Aslan is not only a very serious scholar of World Religions, he has that rarest of gifts: a beautiful style of writing that both informs and entertains but whose goal is edification in the best tradition. Our media culture is saturated with opinions about how the World is SUPPOSED to work, nearly always with the angle that America as super-power is simultaneously surrounded by and amidst sworn enemies. "Beyond Fundamentalism" provides the relevant, cogent information that allows us better to understand the thinking and worldviews of those we frankly do not comprehend. It's a wonderful book, necessary reading for anyone who wants to LEARN more of the world in which we live.

This is a powerful book that helps make sense out of a troubling region. I travelled extensively in the Middle East when I was young and was invited into the Madrassas and mosques by the Imams. I had (at that time) open and stimulating conversations with one and all in the Islamic community. Thus I was puzzled by the complete volte face of the culture during later travels there while I was with the United Nations. Reza Aslan has put together an argument that I think finally makes sense out of what has seemed so incomprehensible.

Reza Aslan is an American professor, born in Iran, a Muslim, a scholar of religion, an astute observer of society, and a first-class writer. His main point is that some people get caught up in a cause and view themselves as representing the Good of the world --- or of the universe. They conclude, therefore, that anyone who is not with them must be evil. "If you're not with us, then you're against us." Good-versus-Evil is the essence of a cosmic war. It will be fought to make the world perfect, or very close to it. The author's simple thesis, in a thoroughly-researched book, is that no force can improve the world to such an extent, so don't get into cosmic wars. Fight on other terms. Aslan delves heavily into Islam, Christianity, and history. He describes various forces and movements that feed into, or oppose, the cosmic view of conflict. I commend him on the breadth of his knowledge.

It is evident to a reader why this book has been called one of the 100 most important books of the decade. It presents a clear and objective picture of religious extremism, its causes, its historical course, the damages already resultant, and the dangers for the future. The book includes related social movements and rational discussion of dealing with extremism and its proponents. Personal anecdotes from the author plus his conversational style render the work enjoyable to read!
