Martin Clarke is fascinated by water. A native Australian, he has spent most of that time surfing, swimming, and soaking up his muse: the ocean. I have mixed feelings about the Walter Foster books. They have been around for years and know what they are doing. The quality is the best ever with good, high-gloss reproductions, and great content - materials, composition, step-by-step instructions, etc. But some of the artists and artwork included are just not my style and are too complex for the average beginner or advanced beginner. But there are some real gems in here of artists I like with doable instructions. There is enough in here to be very useful.

About the Author

In 1969, a group of young, primarily Puerto Rican activists founded the Young Lords Party in New York City, taking inspiration from the Black Panther Party. They summarized their political beliefs and goals in a 13-point program, published and distributed a newspaper called PALANTE and produced a weekly radio show on WBAI also called PALANTE.Iris Morales is an activist, educator, media Producer and author who has spent her life in the struggle for human rights and Puerto Rican liberation. A member of the Young Lords for five years, she rose through the ranks to become Deputy Minister of Education and leader of the Women’s Union. !Palante, Siempre Palante!, her award-winning documentary about the Young Lords was broadcast on national public television and continues to be screened widely in colleges and community venues across the United States. Ms. Morales lives in New York City.

This book used to be very hard to find but has recently been re-issued. The Young Lords were such an important organization, similar to the Black Panthers but with unique innovations. Their occupation of New York City's Lincoln Hospital in 1970, along with revolutionary hospital workers, is of particular interest. They also liberated a city-run tuberculosis x-ray truck. The city had tested 300 people in a week, neglecting the much greater needs of the community, but the Young Lords examined 300 people in a day while they had the truck, showing the community how much better things could be run if the people took over.The book bursts with the eager optimism of the Young Lords in their own voices at the time. It's an incredible document of the hope and possibility of that moment.

Very happy with the book. Better condition than I expected. The only suggestion I would submit is that on larger flexible books I would put cardboard or something. Because it did not say "do not bend" my postman rolled it up into a tight roll and shoved it in my mailbox.

history as I remember it.

Much of the book is a re-printing of the Young Lords’ manifesto - which in turn is stories from many of their members about how they came to join to Young Lords, what the Lords did & their political philosophy. The book is supplemented by numerous photos, along with quite helpful explanatory captions. If one is looking for a little “light-reading” for the holidays - check it out!

About the Author

Brian Curtis joined the art department at The University of Miami in 1985. He is a representational painter whose current series of psycho-mythological narratives explores those transitional, tentative moments that occur between times of purposeful activity. In an age that is often categorized as being in a perpetual state of crisis he seeks, by monumentalizing the ordinary, to reinforce the shared human core that is embedded in everyday experience. Brian completed a five-year project of writing, illustrating, and designing an introductory perceptual drawing text, Drawing from Observation, which McGraw-Hill published in 2002. This book contains over two hundred drawings from Miami students. Brian spent 2001 in his studio preparing for a solo exhibition of his narrative paintings, charcoal drawings, and digitally manipulated images installed at the Lowe Art Museum. In February of 2002 Brian presented a paper at the 90th Annual College Art Association conference in Philadelphia. His paper, titled "Preserving the Post-Medieval Mindset" was part of a session on Perceptual Drawing in Higher Education. In the spring of 1999 Brian was awarded the Dean's Excellence in Teaching award and was also a finalist for the Excellence in Teaching Award for the University of Miami for both 1999 and 2000. Brian is the head of Miami's drawing program and works with students in painting and printmaking programs.

As a professional artist I have many, many art books. This one is unique because it offers really practical techniques for creating effective drawings. It is a well written and well researched book that offers great advice. I have referred it often and I highly recommend this book to anyone from beginner to advanced artist.

I read straight through this book and discovered what a great drawing class it is, and I am working on it. One day I took it to the painting class a friend of mine attends (I drive for him). The instructor looked through the book and told me it is a better course than I could get in university. That was a pretty impressive endorsement!

I wanted to learn how to draw "from life", they that students are taught to in art school. That's what this book is about. If you really want to learn how the professionals do it (and not just to learn how to doodle) then this is the book for you.

This is a book that looks at drawing in a multi-faceted way. A lot of information on how our brains work and how that affects our drawing.

I am not disagreeing that the book does not have some good information; it does for me as a seasoned artist. I was excited that it had lesson plans in the back. (After viewing them, they were not too exciting though.) I read the ratings before purchasing it and it sounded like I found the perfect book. However, after receiving it, there was one review in particular that came to mind and I must agree with that person who stated that in a nutshell, the book was too technical and not user friendly. I was intending to use this book with my students in a HS observational drawing class. That isn't going to happen. The key with high school kids is to provide as much information as possible within a reasonable amount of text so that they may get to work. The longer the text portion of the projects, the faster you lose them. I am interested in suggestions for a HS level text on observational drawing if anyone has any. I am glad I bought this book used!

As a teacher of drawing, I have read many books on the subject. This book is the only one I would use as a textbook. I would agree with all the previous reviews but would only comment on the one review from the budding artist who felt the book is confusing and has too much art history for someone who only wants to learn to draw. I come to this book with over two decades of art experience so maybe that is why I find it so interesting, but even if the history is skipped and you read only the practical explanations and do the lessons in the back of the book, you will learn to draw from observation, as this book promises. The book is not meant to be read in two weeks. Learning to draw takes hard work and invested time.

This was required reading for my intro drawing class. I'm glad to keep this around as a reference book. I've learned a great deal from it. The exercises are useful. There are full page examples that are great to look at.
