Alan Watts has set himself an almost impossible task here by trying to describe the indescribable and know the unknowable. However, along the way, he provides the reader with excellent insights into the mindset of the ancient culture that first conceived what has become an essential building block for virtually every form of religion. It is well worth reading--more than once.
I ha e this only four stars because Alan Watts gives better and more in-depth descriptions elsewhere. Still, this stands as a good, bite-size introduction to the differences in approach between the Western mindset and that of Eastern philosophies. It's a quick read and the concepts are clearly stated. If you are new to understanding Tao, read this.
Taoism & Buddhism have been Westernized and the core ideas distilled and separated from organized religion, making this a path to liberation.Take the book seriously, especially the part about doing this work yourself. There is only one person who can take the path of liberation: You.Do not follow another and expect to be free, learn from others, but run from those who would organize you.
This is a short book but the overview on taoism is a great introduction to Alan Watts and his style of philosophy and taoism. If you like this you'll then love all Alan Watts philosophy on eastern thought. See the Alan Watts "watercourse way" (taoism) and Dr. Wayne Dyers wonderful "change your thoughts change your life" interpretations on the tao te ching a must read for people intrested in taoism.
There are many wonderful books on Tao. This brief book by Alan Watts is , I think, the best. Also, perhaps the best Watts. It gave a much better understanding of Tao writings but a much better understanding of many things.
Helpful for beginners who want to learn the basics of what Taoism is all about.
The four stars is because something sticky and black was on the cover of my book when it arrived (inside of the packaging) and when I tried to rub it off it smeared all over the cover and I can't get it off. However, this was merely a turn off for my OCD and everyone on this planet should read this book. Alan Watts is amazing!
Of course trying to explain an ancient religion in a small volume is very difficult . I could follow the writings right up to the last fourth of the book and then it got very difficult. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone with no knowledge of Tao. The book: " Simple Taoism " is probably one of the best books for an introduction to Taoism
