Most English-speaking readers recognize Jane Austen as the Queen of "Regency" romances (although some of her novels were published during the previous reign). Her characters are drawn brilliantly, with often a satirical eye for detail, and the books are sprinkled with occasional lines that reflect amazing wisdom for someone who never lived beyond middle age. Writers of many genres have picked up phrases from her books to enrich their own efforts; returning to these novels after having read them long ago I recognize certain sentences as having been echoed by Patrick O'Brian and others. The world she describes, polite society of pre-industrial England, is a vanished world, but one we can enjoy and understand through these books. People were the same as today and the characters' struggles to fulfill their notions of romantic love (at least as developed in that time as it is for us) and yet at the same time compromise with their need to marry for money or other advantage, are easy to identify with.I had not read "Northanger Abbey" until now and the Gothic novels it's satirizing are unknown to me, yet even this work stands more or less on its own. The heroine meets a man in the resort town of Bath and is surprised by his father suddenly trying to encourage the two to marry. Then he suddenly turns hostile and sends her packing! Eventually, the bewildered woman discovers that the father of her suitor was deceived by false reports of first her wealth, and then equally false reports of her poverty, into believing she was a shockingly good, and then a shockingly bad, choice for his son to marry! It's a very amusing plot that kept me guessing. The text in this version preserves some of the archaic spelling of the original: "choose" is spelled "chuse" and many of today's compound words are still broken up into their parts like "every one" instead of everyone. This adds color I think, although some readers might be put off.I used the Kindle edition and found it helpful -- the software keeps your place without any physical bookmark and the "pages" look like real pages. Additional books take up no additional space for storage if you want to keep them, and if you don't like one, you can delete it. You can search for words or phrases if you want to go to a particular location in the work. However, the page size is not similar to a physical book so if you were looking by page number you probably won't find what you expect. Also, you can't pass on the copy to another person without also passing on the Kindle hardware, which you won't want to do. It's personal judgment whether you'd be better off with a physical book or the electronic version.Anyway, if you haven't read Miss Austen's novels, you should. Not even an English teacher will look down on you when she finds out. If you have, but no longer possess them, you might want to get this version so you can occasionally return to that very different, but oh so familiar world of elegance and romance.

Absolute garbage. The binding is already coming undone and I haven’t even been reading it for 3 days. I’ve been very careful with it and it’s still falling apart. Unacceptable.

It's Jane Austen, one of the greatest literary icons of all time. I will not review the contents of the writings themselves but rather the vehicle for which they are presented. This unique and gorgeous book is a fine selection of the best of Jane Austen and makes for an excellent addition for the avid collector. The pages are beautifully gold leafed and the cover embellished appropriately without being garish. The print quality is good, but could be better, but this doesn't tarnish the overall appearance. I recommend this collection very strongly.

I am happy with the speedy delivery, however, the binding is ripped on both sides & that was NOT mentioned in the review of the books. I'm very unhappy with the quality of the product!

This is a book made in the style we used to see--page edges are gilded; the paper is thick; and the cover is embossed--not to mention that it has four novels by Austen. This is the kind of book you want to give at Christmas.

I am a Jane Austen fan. This collection is the best summer, fall, winter, spring read ever! I purchased this book for a friend who needed a break from the stresses of life. She adores the time she spends with Jane's characters and a cup of coffee in the quiet of the morning before the work day begins. I highly recommend the collection.

Gorgeous edition. Cover it soft and foil beautiful. Gave it as a gift.

Such a lovely-looking volume. I bought this for a young woman who’s not read Jane Austen, but mentioned that she’d like to do so. This will be an Xmas gift. Its beautiful presentation will make it a memorable gift.
