Finally, a book that reinforces that Hanukah is not the Jewish Christmas and is not about presents. It is about hope in the face of being outnumbered. Here is a story about a latke in the midst of a Christmas story. It is screaming and wailing. And why shouldn't it? Someone who lives in the house without the xmas lights adorning it has tried to fry the latke in sizzling hot oil. Rather than jumping out of the frynig pan and into the fire, this little latke heads for the open window. As the story progresses, we learn about the story of Hanukah and the misconceptions about the latke and the holiday. A variety of popular Christmas symbols cross paths with the latke and think it is nothing more than a hash brown, a nice side meal to a Christmas ham, and more (or less). Oh, what a deep and meaningful book this is. It gets more insightful with each reading. Why do the colored lights fail to understand the latke? Why does the candy cane only focus on its minty fragrence and have no inclination for understanding that not everyone desires a peppermint scent? How could a candy stick be so distasteful under its red and white striped mint coating? Each confrontation ends with the latke running and screaming in search of understanding and identity. Until it lands under a pine tree in a snow covered, deep, dark forest (or is this the subconcious). Yet again, the pine tree is only focused on its small, provincial worldview. If something plopped under it, then it must be a present. No? But wait. A family with an axe approaches the pine forest...
We read this at our granddaughter's preschool, and it was heartily enjoyed by toddlers and grown-ups alike. Lemony Snicket's books are genius at introducing wonderfully big words and defining them for young readers. So while I don't think the word "arrondissement" is going to start tripping off the tongues of toddlers anytime soon, there's something nice about reading a book to kids that can be appreciated on another level.Not that I think this book is just for kids. The story is an absolute riot, especially to all us now grown Jewish kids who never quite got the hang of how to explain to our peers that Chanukah is not Jewish Christmas. It also included a quick lesson on the origins of the holiday, or at least that tale of the oil and Maccabees we all remember so well--whether or not it's true...I must confess... I intended to leave the book behind for the class, but after handing out dreidels and gelt, I decided this would be a present for me. It's a lovely little cloth bound book that I can see myself pulling out year after year to share with someone or other. It's going to have an honored place on my bookshelf.
The Latke Who Couldn't Stop Screaming is a great read a-loud story (perhaps a little long for most preschool listeners.) My six and eight year olds love joining in as the screaming latke. The book is small and the pictures are not large or elaborate. However, my children ask for it every year, when we unpack the ornaments and winter holiday books. It is a lighthearted introduction to Chanukah traditions juxtaposed with the familiar symbols associated with Christmas. This year, a very dear friend visited our family for a couple of days, including the first and second nights of Chanukah. She made us latkes, read this book and used it as a springboard for telling my daughters a more detailed account of the Maccabee Revolt and the temple rededication. She so enjoyed reading this story with our young daughters, that she bought a copy of the book for each of her grandchildren as a Chanukah gift. When she returned home to her family for the last night of Chanukah, they read it together. Apparently it was a hit with her grandchildren and her grown children as well. My only complaint: I have been waiting for years for an audio version. I look for it every year. Have I missed it?

The Latke Who Couldn't Stop Screaming, A Christmas Story is a delightful tale that reveals the origins of the latke, a potato pancake that is part of the delicacies that many munch on during the traditional Hanukah celebrations. But Snicket brings the latke alive and shows it too is a part of the Christmas celebrations as he has the latke venture into the world of the symbolic meaning of the Christmas and Jewish holidays - each one is definitely closely linked and share a common bond historically and culturally.The symbolic imagery clearly is narrated as the lakte meets his counterparts of the Christmas holiday that consists of a string of Christmas lights, pine tree, and candy cane. Each one somewhat educates and shares with the lakte how important it is to the Christmas season, and even suggests that it should have a Christmas carol. But throughout the story and the numerous convincing that the candy cane and the pine tree suggest, the latke is not quite convinced and it screams in "aaahhhhhhhhh!!!" of its denial.The Latke Who Couldn't Stop Screaming is indeed an eye-opening tale for all ages to read during the Christmas and Hanukah holiday season. And with every Snicket tale, there is always a lesson to be learned or pondered upon.
This is a cute book. I'm not familiar with Lemony Snicket's other books so I probably don't appreciate it as much as his fans, but I bought it for a Hanukkah gift for my father and I think he's going to find it amusing. The illustrations are nice, and the story is short and probably appropriately for older children. It also works in parts of the story of Hanukkah, but is mostly a story about trying to explain something and being misunderstood, which is probably an idea a lot of kids can relate to. It's a hardcover book, and the cover is beautiful.
A fun Chanukah book. Honors both the Christian and Jewish traditions of winter festivals. It makes a case for how one may feel misunderstood when one celebrates differently from the majority.
