Finally, I have been waiting for this book to come out! It is a huge step up from the last NARS makeup book, which unfortunately left me feeling very disappointed. The book itself is a hardback binder with wire spirals, this makes it really easy to turn pages and keep them open, just in case you want to copy along. The book is set up in sections: Introduction, How this book works (which is important to read), Tips before you begin working, Skin, "Play" looks", "Perfect" looks, and "Polish" looks.In the beginning of the book, there are just quick little tips on eyes, face, and skin which I found to be really helpful. And it isn't just those typical basics, I mean for example: beginning with a light color on the lid, blending is key, eyeliner pencil can be used for more than just lining, explaining the density of brushes and which textures of products work best with them. Of course he elaborates, but just briefly enough to give you information. I appreciated that. Now on to the fun part, the makeup! Just like before, both pages are a before and after with a little clear sheet to go on top of the after page. What is written on this clear sheet, is the placement and name of the product used. Very simple and easy to follow.The one thing that separated this book from his last, was the use of a wider variety of models. More african, middle eastern, latino, and asian women were included. I truly appreciated this because, all skin color should be celebrated and Nars realizes that. In addition to adding more skin color diversity, the entire polish section is dedicated to older women. Basically I love the book, I am a NARS fanatic and I'm pleased to see a whole new set of looks I can create using the makeup! The book is definitely worth more than what amazon is charging which makes it a great deal :)
I know how to apply make up on myself. I know what kind of formula of foundation is best to my skin. I don' t need to guide which colors suits me best. But what I really lack is inspiration.I purchased this book when I noticed that all my make-up shades other than naturals/nudes are left intact or used very little as I am not very sure how to make it colorful yet wearable. I used to cut out some pictures from magazines with faces of beautifully/colorfully applied make-up, but then I decided to buy this book.I have to say that I am completely satisfied with my purchase. There are so many and versatile looks there with different ethnicities and ages (there are even looks for males). I actually tried out couple of looks wich are absolutely not of my ethnicity and skin tone, and this really helped me to make some updates in my make-up routine.The negative aspect which I noticed is, not all the pages lack numbering. In the meantime, the author in the descriptions reference to some look from mentioning the name of the model and page where the look can be found. However, the pages with the pictures does not have numbers. Also I do not recomend to start with this book for those who are just starting to use make-up and need some basic guidance.
For some odd reason, makeup artists do not release makeup books often. Therefore, when a makeup artist does release a makeup book, it is very exciting. There is nothing like sitting at the feet of a master, and François Nars is definitely a master. His new book in ten years titled, Makeup Your Mind: Express Yourself, is the most genius way to show techniques and looks. The pages bounded in a hardcover binder with spirals makes for an easy page-turner as you use plastic overlays to regard each look. The book starts with a foreword, introduction, how this book works, tips before you begin, skin, play, perfect, and polish.Naturally, the reader will want to get to the meat of the book to oh and awe at the plastic overlays between each pair of images. However, it would behoove the reader to start with "how the book works" so not to become disappointed with the book. In addition, the title of the book is delicious. When the words "express yourself" come about, the song "Express Yourself" by American hip-hop group N.W.A impregnates the mind. Both perfect titles because both mediums center on the idea of free expression and revile censorship.Nars gives short concise tips on tools, skin, eyes, cheeks, and lips that he uses to create looks. Consider them basics, not the ones you may be used to hearing, but basic nonetheless. Then, the main event that everyone has been waiting for. Each subject with a before and after photo, taken in exactly the same light, angle, and size with a transparent plastic overlay between each pair of images that has a template of the cosmetics used, exactly as positioned on the subject. If that does not satisfy you, at the end of each section there are detailed instructions with each brush used, just like a YouTube video.On each plastic overlay, Nars tells you not only which product he used but also what type of color he used. Therefore, even if you do not have the specific Nars product, you can still find something in your existing makeup collection to compensate for the look. This way, you do not have to be familiar with Nars' makeup line in order to adore the look, though it helps and aids with the experience.Some things missing for this reviewer were less African models with typical looks. Many -with the exception of one- were very safe. This reviewer would love to see the looks and colors that Nars applied on other subjects on the darker skinned subjects. In addition, telling readers why he uses certain colors and brushes, like the yachiyo, for blush would be nice. A beginner may not know that yachiyo brushes are for very pigmented blushes and should be in every African woman's makeup brush arsenal. Notice that Mr. Nars used yachiyo brushes in support of African woman for blush.However, between the amazing photos, the advice, and the details this is a great book -very impressed. This is not only for Nars-holics, but also for makeup enthusiasts, and makeup newbies starting on their makeup journey. Mr. Nars comes off as humble and seems genuine in his desire to teach women and makeup artists his craft, and this reviewer is more than happy to learn.
