Review

“Drawing deeply on her own teaching and writing and using a multitude of examples from classic and contemporary fiction, [Scofield] offers a meticulous guide to revising a novel... The lasting messages of this inspiring book are 'read, read, read,' 'write the best prose you can,' and 'love the process and what you learn.'"-- Publishers Weekly, starred review"This title stands out from the crowd of others on the subject. For readers who are thinking about publishing their writing."-- Library Journal, starred review“An award-winning fiction writer and teacher shares hard-won advice. Novelist and memoirist Scofield…brings her experience as a writer and teacher to a practical, encouraging manual focused on revision. … Patience and commitment, this useful guide reveals, are a writer's strongest assets.”-- Kirkus Reviews“Sandra Scofield has written a needed book: not how to begin a novel, but how to get one into shape and on point. She is insightful on the importance of scene and ingenious on the value of summary and the role of interiority. She offers exercises for describing, evaluating, energizing, and enriching a draft in ways both minute and structural. For a novelist in that perplexing stage between a messy version and a viable manuscript, The Last Draft may be a godsend.” —Janet Burroway, author of Writing Fiction

This is a wonderful book if you're serious about making your book the best it can be (and getting it published). After you finish your first draft, you typically have a mixture of pretty good stuff, a few plot holes, some bad writing, some flat characters -- where do you even start? Scofield breaks revision into manageable chunks, and she shows, with plenty of examples, how to deal with each one. She's a writer (with seven novels), a teacher, an editor, and a friendly voice on the page to help you get over the hump. This book, along with my dogeared copy of Scofield's "The Scene Book," is my favorite craft book ever. P.S. My first novel, which Scofield helped me revise, is scheduled for publication in spring 2019.

Award-winning novelist, Sandra Scofield (her novel, Beyond Deserving was a finalist for the National Book Award) has been working with aspiring novelists for over two decades. As an aspiring writer myself, I know that completing a first draft, while not easy, is not all that difficult if you have some discipline. But the really daunting challenge is what to do next. How do we make this rough manuscript into a real novel, something we can be proud of? Something that others might want to read? There is no magical formula, but Scofield’s guide provides a map for how we can proceed. She writes clearly and humbly and doesn’t try to overpromise. Most writers know that the odds against being published are huge.I’ve used Scofield’s guide and it has helped me to write a much better novel. And just as important as the guidance she provides for the revision process, is the honest perspective she shares on the writing life. Here is what Scofield had to say about her own career:“I’ve never had a book with large sales. All my books, however received warm critical praise including a nomination for the National Book Award…I’m proud of my books. I’ve known writers who, to me, are famous, but who feel they didn’t get the acclaim they deserved. Some died still lamenting their careers. I can only say: Get over it. Write what you love; love writing it; hope for a readership; appreciate every reader. So a million people don’t buy your book? Would it be such a terrible thing to say that only ten thousand, or four thousand, or hell, four hundred people read your book? Think about that. Every reader’s time is precious. I love all my readers.”I highly recommend this guide for anyone who has a first draft or is just considering writing a novel. It is an incredible resource.

Sandra Scofield's goal in this writer's craft book is simple: to help a writer at any skill level develop a plan to organize and revise a completed novel. Scofield asks the writer to look at her novel in a new way, from a different angle, with fresh perspective. More than that, she gives the novelist specific strategies and examples for how to achieve that. Writers often intuitively know a scene or a part of their novel isn't working but can't put their finger on why it isn't working. This book provides specific strategies to diagnose and fix the problem areas.Revision is the hard work of making your novel better. The good news is - Scofield gives you the blueprint. You won't be randomly reading draft after draft, hoping to glean some new insight. If you do the exercises Scofield offers, you will be systematically taking apart your book, analyzing it and making changes. This book is for the serious writer who is ready to take on the tough work required in revising.I read the book as a whole in order to absorb the bigger meanings, and then revisited specific areas that needed addressed in my novel. There are many ways to use this book, and I highly recommend giving it a go!

Completing the first draft of a novel is a feat in itself, but that is just the beginning. Next comes the first of what could be multiple revisions. No wonder writers sometimes run out of steam. The Last Draft is the perfect antidote. In the book, Sandra Scofield guides her readers through a practical process to focus and deepen the “aboutness” of the story. Scofield is a fan of the physical act of revision—incorporating hard copies of the draft, color-coded index cards and lots of exploration of the “What ifs?” For all of her published works and literary accolades, she is still able to return to her beginner’s mind and speak to the emerging writer with clarity and compassion. Reading this book was like having a warm (and wise) mentor at my elbow.

Meandering and unorganized. A bit wordy and not organized like most writing technique books. I learned a a few things, but not as much as I’d hoped. She would say things like “To get this concept, just talk through novel after novel to yourself or with a friend.” If I wanted reading books to teach me everything I don’t know, then why did I buy your book? Makes no sense when writers are lazy with their teaching like this.

This book was a godsend while completing my manuscript. What I love best about Sandra’s guidebooks are the love she shows for readers and writers, how committed she is to helping writers find their path. Whether you are ready to pitch your book or just figure out how to arrange chapters, this book helps you and never leaves you in the dark. The author encourages you to break down your novel like an architect, step away from it and view it from an outside angle. With so many exercises to choose from, a writer might be tempted to skim over some, but don’t - that is where the alchemy begins. By the end you may look at your own work, slap your head and said, “Of course! That’s exactly it.”As much as I enjoyed the Scene Book (a staple for writers) THE LAST DRAFT brings novel writing to another level.
