Manga writer and essayist extraordinaire Tetsu Kariya graduated from prestigious Tokyo University. This one has some good points and some places where it lags a bit. There are no 'battles' that I remember, but quite a bit of mis-steps by Shiro and Yuuko. It talks a lot about what would be called "comfort foods" in America, including some small focuses on beer in one story, and eel in another. This volume deals with some members of the staff, talks about the pitfalls of introducing foreigners to Japanese cuisine, and finalizes Shiro and Yuuko's relationship, including chapters on naming children. It was not my favorite volume in the series (I think I liked the Sake volume best) but this is definitely a decent one. The series is a classic but a bit repetitive in the compiled form here, still I'll miss Shiro and Yuuko after the Viz volumes are done.

This series of books was ery interesting for me. I wish that they werre numbered so that i could have read them in order. Izakaya or Japanese pubs can be considered akin to the American local bar that has a small kitchen, but not as big as a Sports bar with full menus. This volume covers several different kinds of foods served at Izakayas, how they were developed and what could be done to change them up a bit. These books also have an engaging story that goes along with it, giving some meaning behind the pub crawling. This is not just a restaurant review or foodie guide. This series actually follows peoples lives, how good food can alter how you think about things, and how different preparations of the same type of food can change what you think is considered good food. I would have given this series 5 stars but for not being able to tell what order to read them in. You do not need to read the entire series of books if you are only intereseted in a certain type. Each volume has a small intro section to introduce the characters and let you know what is going on.

 Fun read on Japanese food and culture.

Thoroughly enjoyable. with so much background detail!

Fascinating facts about food and customs in Japan. Actually like that it reads right to left.

Great story, interesting recipes, good knowledge about Japanese culture. I do recommend!

The whole series is great. Wish they would translate more stories to English.

I have a few other of Debbie Madison's cookbooks, they are very good, just like this one is too!!! The recipes look delicious and I can't wait to try them out!!! Am soooo glad I got this cookbook. I bought my own rotisserie because I love this type of cooking but mainly for the chicken.Anyone who wants it all laid out this is a good buy. I am a diabetic I eat low carb did not let this book scare me away. Just swap out the carb or glutton items you do not want.

I found some new ideas for dinner using a deli chicken in this book and I'm sure my family will be very appreciative! A deli chicken is a real time saver and a good value for the money.

I've cooked a chicken numerous times in the crockpot with Debbie's basic chicken recipe. It is every bit as represented. Truly delicious as a rotisserie store bought chicken! Plus there's more recipes for that chicken once cooked. Yum.

I give this 5 stars because it is awesome! So many tasty, and aromatic, recipes. I would reccommend this book to anyone that enjoys cooking with chicken.

If you travel to the Khyber area today, you will see that the people and landscape how the author describes them have not changed at all. I found his account in so far like a mirror of what I found there in 2007. But although the narrative is in deed anecdotal and to a great extent entertaining it has its lengths as well and I could not find so much adorable in it as the "Guardian" liked it to comment.Maybe the author was also seeking for too much adorable. I found it rather disturbing to include the Sindh into "The Frontier", although it makes some sense, since the clue to the turbulence at the Frontier is more in the Madrasahs of the big cities like Karachi than in the villages of the Khyber Pass area.The people who live there in the Hindukush, mostly Pashtunes (Pathans), although being one of the most ferocious human breed, are indeed great people in so many respects, but - alas! - they often appear not to have education enough to can measure what is right for them when they make political moves. Think of the Germans in Nazi times then you have an idea of what I mean. These people have no right guidance and this makes them so unpredictable. And as the author cites the Superintendent Malik: "Nothing much can be expected of people with empty stomachs!"But even with full stomaches, these people think big of themselves and nothing ever changed this. The British tried already in colonial times, but failed.But the insight of the author was more thorough than mine, when he states something which was not apparent for me, filling a whole chapter in his book: the heroine addiction of the Pakistanis due to the illegal trade along the border line. "In just 2 years the number of users in the country had risen from zero to thirty thousand at least. Most of the addicts were well-to-do people in Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore."Although my contact man, a television man in Islamabad, could not (or did not want to) admit that there is such a real problem in a society given to Islam sovereignty, I think the author is right. The fields of Afghanistan are close by and on both sides live Pashtunes who have no objections or remorse to make a business with their fellow men.Narcotics have always been used in this part of the world! "The British East Indian Company merely perpetuated this ruling monopoly in its own heyday, extending the market to China, and on a smaller scale to Europe until the Germans discovered the process of acetylation in which morphine refined further into heroin. Likewise the heroic tribe of the Pashtunes succumb to the un-heroic consume of drugs. They should know it!Drugs where not on my itinerary, but the political ideas of the Pasthunes, openly expressed in Peshawar, the Frontier town. Moorhouse could not oversee the same issue. Do the Pashtunes want their own responsibilities? How far will it go? "What is all the talk about Pashtunistan one day...we have the thing already, right here, right now!"Right, because for them there are no borders at all, they move around wherever and whenever they want. 2 Million Afghans live in Peshawar and around and they have the same cultural and ethnic affinity as their Pashtune cousins in Pakistan. Apart from blood, language and religion they have in common the Pukhtunwali which is the rigid code of the Pashtunes. "They do not accept anybody else`s laws in their tribal territories." The most alien to outsider`s experience "of human behaviour in the twentieth century" could be "Badal", the most powerful element of this code. "It means revenge, either personal or communal, and it is pursued regardless of any other consideration, and with no thought for the time needed to accomplish it, which has occasionally taken more than a generation."Good is Moorehouse in the description of such Pashtune peculiarities. Another example, here about the status of women in the tribal society: "No women in the world can be more jealously possessed by their menfolk than the women of the Pathans, and it is both rare and dangerous for a male outside her family so much as to look upon a Pathan woman`s face." Indeed I saw none at all in Peshawar. And if things go really bad: "The custom is for the woman to be shot by her own father or brother, the man to be executed by his father or uncle. The honour of two families is thereby cleansed of all stain."The Pashtunes did not and do not submit to alien rule, as most Indians did. "They made accommodoations, but many of their tribesmen spent their lives in the desert and the hills, eager to kill any outsider who infringed the smallest tribal claim".Still goes, you have to be a man to be accepted there! And hard to yourself. There is the dramatic topography, the climate that is always harsh, either hot and dusty or savage bitter cold, no warm shower, no restaurants, hard to be successful in what you intend to do!Respectable is that Moorehouse succeeded to get acquainted with so many of these people who show often reservation towards westerners. And he seemed to have his connections. My connection was mainly limited to the ever present Khyber police escort. Only in Peshawar you can move freely. But beware what you say!

Let me start off by saying I NEVER write reviews for products I purchase despite how much I rely on them to make sounds purchases online. Nevertheless, I'm making a point to write one today about this book. That's how much I am appalled at the fact this book was even published. If you make the decision to buy this book even after reading this review, expect to see pages full of the same basic concepts repeated over, and over, and over again, littered with grammatical errors that rival the writing skills of a junior high schooler (no offense to any junior high school student lol). The content is so bland and lacks detail and scientific backing. To be quite honest, this entire book with the little valuable information it contains, could be cut down to a travel sized pamphlet you'd see at a gas station or a tourist/visitor's welcome center. Do yourself a favor and buy another book that's SPECIFICALLY written about the cultivation of marijuana to get a solid foundation on how the plant grows from seed to harvest. Then, if you so desire to attempt an aquaponic setup for you newly developed hobby, purchase a book SPECIFICALLY in the subject of aquaponic gardening/horticulture. I thought this book was going to beneficial at trying to capture both topics in one, and was sorely mistaken. Good luck with your journey on homegrown medicine, and don't forget to vote for legal cannabis use and personal cultivation. END PROHIBITION!!! Shout out DGC!!!

I really enjoy DIY related books and this one was definitely a solid helper. The author explains the Aquaponics method with great clarity and I love this method because theirs not a lot o mess and the clean up is easy. If you are looking for new at-home way to grew your weed, I'd definitely look into this guide.

I had never heard of this growing method before, but the author lays out what you need to know in easy-to-understand steps and at a low cost. Really made me excited to try this myself. Seems like a lot less mess & better results!

I’m a grower newbie and had only grown in soil. Was recommended to try aquaponics to increase my yield which is why I got this book. I found it helpful in getting my aquaponics system set up and understanding the process.

This is a great manual for all home growers, this book outlines step by step process that is easy to follow and enjoy a great result. I know and have tried this method and I agree with the author that this is not a fast growing method, it takes time to harvest your crops but the quality is truly amazing.

It is all about potency when it comes to growing the good stuff. The author makes a valid claim that by using the aquaponics method the potency and the concentration of THC are always consistent which is a great selling point in my opinion. After reading this book, I did some online research on my own and found some validity to his claims due to the constant supply of good nutrition, most plants produce greater fruits than when they are grown on soil. I must say, I am surprised that no one else has written about it yet. This a must read for all home growers.

This is one well- researched book, I am sure he has gone through the process to be able to write in such details. But the only reason I gave this book a 4 star when it truly deserves a 5 star, I was hoping to see a full image or two of his own aquaponics setup, which he didn't share, Though, he shared some stock images but not his own, all in all an excellent book on this type of growing method. Â

The mantle of leadership must not be viewed lightly. The roles and responsibilities of any stewardship position hold the potential to build up or break down. Whether it be in a corporation or a church, the weight of leadership can be a difficult burden to continuously carry. Society expects strong and definitive decisions while many who share in the work want nothing short of perfection. There is a reason so many leaders abandon their positions or burn out of their chosen profession. Weakness is present and eventually the point is reached where it can no longer be hidden from public view. Fearing negative repercussions and seeing nothing but failure, people will abandon their position and seek to start again somewhere new. This cycle of ever-changing leadership is all too common and can create a myriad of problems. Seeking to put a stop to the chaos is author Dan B. Allender. Within his book, Leading with a Limp, readers are encouraged to take advantage of their weakness for the good of those being led.The title of this work comes from the Biblical account of Jacob's wrestling with God found in Genesis 32:24-32. After spending a lifetime seeking to build a kingdom, this ancient patriarch recognized his inability to craft a perfect life. It took a night of wrestling with the Lord to turn the corner. He surrendered to God's control, but was left with a limp. This physical reminder of weakness would help Jacob remember that the blessings of life came not from his own hand but from the Lord. It is a lesson that all leaders must learn. No one has the capability to carry out responsibility with perfect wisdom, strength, or sustainability. Sinfully weak but sanctified believers must look to the Lord and His guidance. Honesty and authenticity are the place to begin. From this powerful admission, the author seeks to build a lifestyle of leadership that is directed and upheld by the hand of God.As president of Mars Hill Graduate School, Dan B. Allender practices leadership while at the same time preparing future leaders for service. His qualifications are apparent and his logic is sound as the book unfolds chapter by chapter. The only drawback to this particular work is found in its intended audience. Although seemingly written for Christian readership, the content seems to lose its consistency as it generalizes truths so as not to isolate a secular audience. Therefore some passages are quite focused on Christ-centered leadership while other portions of the book barely reference a scripture passage. This oscillation makes the book somewhat uneven. In addition, the author makes use of politically-correct gender pronouns rather than the classical term "he" which used to convey a neutral connotation. The constant switch of "he" to "she" from one paragraph to the next becomes rather confusing and often slows down the text as one is left to figure out if the term is meant in the general sense or in reference to a particular person. Aside from these few quibbles, the book's benefit is quite useful for leaders struggling under the weight of great responsibility.

If I had to sum up in one phrase all the leadership literature I have read over the few years, I would say, “Leading is difficult, very difficult.”Every moment of every day is affected by leadership. Whether it be at work, at school, or at home, our lives are affected by the decisions of our personal leadership or by the leaders above us.Leadership is certainly not for the weak. Or is it?This is the theme of Dan Allender’s Leading with a Limp. When we think of leaders, we tend to think of men and women who live in their own personal solar system. These leaders are different. They only work. They never stop. They don’t look, sound, or act like us. They seem to be of another species. However, this view of leadership is skewed and only found in our heads.Allender points us to the leaders God chose throughout the Bible. The most revealing fact is that almost every single leader we find in the Scriptures are chosen by God and only accepted reluctantly by the person. I'm about halfway through this book, and I'm really enjoying it. The author talks about different challenges and struggles each leader faces. The pitfalls of leadership are outlined and talked about, as well as appropriate and inappropriate responses to each obstacle. I wish I had had this book available 30 or so years ago, when I was wrestling with my mother's nastiness and what my acceptance of it was modeling for my daughter. My instincts did help- but it would have been very supportive to have had the information and perspectives in this book at the time!Most, close to all mothers, do the best they can. Some do not, and for some, the "best they can" is utterly inadequate. This book addresses the daughters of such mothers with both perspective and ways to cope with the reality of our lives- from effectively setting boundaries up through "divorcing" her if nothing else works.Highly recommended for daughters of unloving mothers.

I always seem to be a good candidate for Susan's books. I've read Emotional Blackmail, Toxic In-Laws, and I've already had the chance to skim over Toxic Parents. I was so impatient for this book: Mothers Who Can't Love to come out. How thoroughly relieving that someone dares to challenge the world's greatest taboo: Unloving Mothers. I was born to a woman who should have never been allowed to be a mother. Since cutting off my ties with my mother, I have been urged to reconcile and have been criticized with every line possible. I've heard the "she gave you life" and "honour thy mother". I've been told to try to understand her because of lack of education. I've been told to suck it up because everyone knew how she was. Susan lists all these cliches. The queen mother of all criticism and threats is: "I hope when you have kids, they will not do this to you." Susan understands how hard it is to come to terms with not having a loving mother and how it's even harder to defend your decision from the innumerable people who do not accept it.The first part of her book addresses the many faces of an unloving mother. Mine was the narcissistic mother. Sometimes she could be downright psychotic and abusive. For me however when you have been hit enough, it's only a sheer irritation that my mother thought she could scare me with a belt. Susan gave me such clarity and validation with this section. I was always so confused as to why my mother could occasionally be loving and why everything went down the drain when I found my soulmate. These kinds of mothers don't mind you as long as you do what she wants you to do, as long as she has control over you, and most of all-- as long as you don't become a woman. I no longer feel threatened when my relatives try to remind me of the good times I had with my mother. In a lot of ways, I was no more than a piece of property to her. I was deprived and pruned so that I could one day be given away like property then people would see how amazing and strict she was. Thus, she would gain other people's fear and respect. That was her ambition all along and it didn't sit well with her that I refused to be treated like a trophy. My world came crashing down when I realized her need for fear and respect from a bunch of faceless people meant more to her than my life and happiness. She had no qualms about trying to break me, thinking I would eventually capitulate. Like many unloving mothers, she wreaked havoc on my conscience. I felt horrible for not obeying her commands. I felt so guilty whenever she reminded me of all she did for me. Like many daughters of unloving mothers, you break in another way be it physical illness or in my case: depression.This book also made me aware of how every experience with an unloving mother will mold the way you go through life. I've been on the receiving end of my mother saying: "I wish you were never born" and "You should have died a long time ago"-- all in the same breath. However, her destruction did not start when I fell from grace. The tendency to feel responsible for other people's happiness, feeling guilty if you don't comply with other people's wishes, and chasing approval all steams from how your mother raised you. It was such a shock for me to read that love does not have to be earned. I still remember my bridesmaids' speech during my wedding. They called me loving. They said they loved me. I was speechless and felt that I didn't deserve it. Sure I love my husband but I never expected much of it back. How bizarre it was for me when he was always there for me and took care of me without a second thought. How bizarre it was for me when a friend pointed out that my husband loves me more than how other husbands love their wives.All of these scars and self-punishment were from the way my mother programmed me from birth. No, I will never have a loving mother but that is okay. The notion of the Loving Mother is bade farewell in Susan's book. I learned to say that it's okay. Moreover, I can be a loving mother to myself. And just because I never received the nurture I needed, it doesn't mean that I can't be a loving mother when I have children.Most importantly, my rights are spelled out. I no longer need to feel guilty. It was my right to live my life the way I wanted. It is MY choice whether I want to have my mother in my life. If I am ever urged or criticized again to have my mother in my life, that person will be on the receiving end of some very good non-defensive communication.

My wife’s mother tortures her with her self-centeredness and dependency; however, it is difficult for us to disentangle ourselves from her web of lies, partly because we encounter resistance from family members (wife’s 3 older sisters) who refuse to acknowledge that a mother can have flaws. They prefer to praise the unloving mother, because they desperately yearn for the love that she is incapable of giving, so much so that they are blind to her failure.Dr. Forward’s book cuts through the nonsense that is the notion of the perfect mother and shines a light on the painful cycle of guilt and acquiescence experienced by unloved daughters, a cycle with which I have become sadly familiar.Ladies, Dr. Forward is on your side. We men need more strong voices like Dr. Forward out there advocating for daughters.

I think this book is helpful for learning the different types of abusers, developing some coping strategies, and for moving forward with your life in a healthier way. My mother fit almost every category in the book and the abuse she and my father inflicted on myself and my siblings caused long-standing problems for all of us. Her abusive behavior continued well into my adult years,and I tolerated it, not knowing any better, until I became physically ill and was hospitalized. That was when I first learned she was abusive and I was allowing it to go on! Needless to say, she hasn't been a part of my life for many years now, but the damage was already done. I have been in counseling, have attended al-anon meetings, and have read numerous self-help books, including other books by Dr. Forward. I find her style of writing is easy for me to read and understand and I like her use of personal case stories. There are so many times I read what has happened to someone else and can completely relate because the same thing happened to me! Her suggestions on how to deal with the pain and grief of specific incidents were very helpful. This book was not easy for me to get through because of the emotions some of the exercises unleashed. It took me over 6 months to finish it, but when I did, I felt that I finally had a handle on what had happened to me, both in understanding the whys, and discovering ways to work through the emotional pain. It's been almost as long since I finished the book. I wish I could say that was the end of it, but I don't think you can ever get past that kind of treatment completely. It seems to rear its ugly head at the times you least expect it. At least now I have some tools to put it back in its place.
